REFLECTION: An amazing shift occurs in this psalm. The psalmist, in rapt contemplation of the military glory and plundering victories of the Lord, suddenly shifts his focus to the one distinguishing characteristic that sets God above all gods, “Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens” (v. 19). This God who shakes the earth when he marches, whose chariots are beyond number, who thunders with a mighty voice, actually stoops to bear the burdens of the lowest of his subjects—the fatherless, the widows, and prisoners. He became flesh and tented among us; he took on himself the iniquities of us all; he was bruised for our sins, and by his wounds we are healed. Truly, “our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death” (v. 20).
